How Spiritualism Misrepresents God’s Love (Part 2)
Knowing how Satan works through spiritualism to cause people to doubt what the Bible says, we need to be careful to be aware and to avoid those who are working as agents of Satan while giving the appearance of being ministers of light. This is a matter of such great importance that Paul wrote to the Corinthians, “For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him…. For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.” KJV, 2 Corinthians 11:2-4, 13-15, emphasis added.
One must understand that Paul is talking about the genuine Christ Jesus of whom he preached, and contrasting with “another Jesus” of whom others–false apostles, deceitful workers–were preaching. Spiritualists are becoming more “Christian” in their teaching. They equate unconditional love with the unselfishness of Jesus, and make it look like “obedience” to ask “what would Jesus do” while leading others to break the law of God–which is the very definition of sin! It also reveals the lie that we can atone for our mistakes. This is the error inherent within the concept of unconditional love. It does away with the Everlasting Gospel economy which requires blood for the remittance of sin.
“When we love one another we shall hold no fear of breaking the Ten Commandments, as we strive to live to do good toward our neighbors. As Spiritualists, we learn that through a God law of love, if we make mistakes we can atone for them. Through suffering and repentance, we learn to progress spiritually. The door to reformation is never closed, only as long as we, ourselves, allow it to remain so; therefore, we need no creed other than the understanding that we alone must be our own master in the freedom and knowledge of worshiping God in Spirit and in truth. ‘For in Him we move, live and have our being,’ that we may enjoy the fruits of our Father’s mansions and as we learn to unfold our spiritual gifts and potentialities, we shall become more in tune with His perpetual blessing.” (“Philosophy of Spiritualism and Christianity’s Creed,” Rev. Melvena V. Hafner, The National Spiritualist Summit, Vol. 61, No. 658, August 20, 1979, emphasis added.)
“Spiritualism’s message is one of Love and Mercy and Compassion, and the true spirit of God. The gospel of damnation to human souls, as fanatical evangelists teach it, is a gospel of hatred and abject superstition.” (“Spiritualism’s Foundation”, Rev. Converse E. Nickerson, The National Spiritualist, Aug. 1958, 3.)
But God has warned us in His Holy Word, and in the Spirit of Prophecy, just what is the end of those who make such boasts. “The boastful spiritualist claims great freedom, and in smooth, flowery language seeks to fascinate and delude unwary souls to choose the broad path of pleasure and sinful indulgence, rather than the narrow path and the straight way. Spiritualists call the requirements of God’s law bondage, and say those who obey them live a life of slavish fear. With smooth words and fair speeches they boast of their freedom and seek to cover their dangerous heresies with the garments of righteousness. They would make the most revolting crimes be considered as blessings to the race.” (Ellen White, Confrontation, 90, emphasis added.)
